This blog is all about rusty old crap that I find lying around. Not sure why I like this sort of thing. Partly it's the sense of nostalgia, remembering something that was once new and brilliant, maybe state-of-the-art technology from years gone by, or something that represents the pride and joy or effort of its creator. Partly it's because I hate the idea that beauty = flawless. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, and while many people do like flawless, I just happen to like rust.

Anyway, on with the crap...

This is the name plate of a rusty old roller found in the field Polmanter in St Ives, Cornwall.
Bizarrely, it appears that these are still available new from Mortimer, although according to Wikipedia the original company Sothert & Pitt went bust in 1989.

Can't remember where I found this.  It was in a ranger's yard somewhere in Hampshire, UK.

This is some rusty pipework I found somewhere up on the hills in Yorkshire, I think it was Ilkley Moor.
I have no idea what they are, possibly they're to do with some underwater reservoir or water pipe, but there's nothing else near them to provide clues.

The picture quality isn't great as it was starting to get dark.

This fence keeps people out of the old Birnbeck pier at Weston-super-Mare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birnbeck_Island).  So while the whole pier is wonderfully rusty, this is as close as I can get.

As with most rusty old things, I have no idea what this could be.  Even more puzzling, I found it at the Alton Towers theme park, I think it was in the queue for the log flume.  Maybe it is part of an antique fairground ride.

Some fantastic rusty old mining machinery at  Big Pit in South Wales.  These worked hard for many years down a real working coal mine, but now that mining in South Wales is not really economically viable, they now lie resting in the sunshine in the beautiful Welsh countryside.

Pay a visit if you're ever in the area, the ex-miners love sharing their former life with visitors, and it's free.

I found this weird thing at the foot of Brean Down near Bristol.  There are the remains of a military fort at the top of the cliffs but I can't see any connection between this rusty structure that the fort.  Nor can I see any pipes nearby.  So I still have absolutely no idea what it is.

Next time I go there, I'll take a closer look and see if I can find a name plate on it.

This is part of the pier at Weston-Super-Mare, England.

I like it because: it's just so rusty, yet still in full working order.  Or is it?  Let's hope they did a proper analysis before building a brand new fun fair and entertainment complex on top.

The "sea" here is actually the estuary of the Bristol Channel, which has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world.  They keep talking about building a tidal energy generator there, but never quite manage to get it past the environmentalists.
